Jersey City has seen tremendous destruction of its' industrial past in favor of economic progress. This photo taken in 1999 is of the "Powerhouse," standing in the heart of the financial district. Built in 1908, my fear as I was taking the photograph was that this magnificent building would be buried under a new skyscraper and it would not see its centennial. Today, at 101 years old, it is being transformed into a cultural, entertainment and arts center and will be the cornerstone of the "Powerhouse Arts District."
